As the natural aging process takes its course, it is normal to experience aesthetic changes. Your facial tissues may begin to thin out, wrinkles and fine lines may form, and cellulite may pop up, diminishing your once youthful contours. Injectable treatments have not only become a hot trend for counteracting the visible negative effects of facial aging, but they are also used to plump lips, hands, and feet and even diminish cellulite.

There are different categories of injectables, mainly dermal fillers and neuromodulators. While both play the significant role of minimizing the appearance of lines and creases, they work differently to achieve these goals.

What Is the Difference Between Dermal Fillers and Neuromodulators?

A dermal filler is a solution injected beneath the skin to physically fill — or add volume — to areas that are lacking it. This can be used to augment facial contours, such as the cheeks or the lips, or fill deep creases and lines, such as nasolabial folds (parentheses lines between the nose and mouth) or marionette lines.

Neuromodulators work by injecting the solution into high-movement muscles — such as those around the eyes, forehead, and mouth — that contract to form wrinkles. This solution relaxes the muscles and blocks chemical signals that instruct those muscles to contract. Therefore, wrinkles are smoothed.

Am I a Candidate for an Injectable Treatment?

If you are looking to reduce wrinkles or enhance volume in facial features such as the cheeks, around the eyes, lips or want to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, or cellulite, you can consider having an injectable. As we age we lose fullness in the cheeks and temporal areas and along the jawline. Restoring fullness in these areas can give you a more youthful appearance.

Good candidates should be in good general health and have realistic expectations of the treatment’s outcome.

How Are Injectables Administered?

During your consultation, your certified provider will discuss concerns and desired outcomes and assess your skin to determine which products best suit your specific needs. Many injectable patients undergo a treatment plan that combines several injectable products. This is commonly referred to as a liquid facelift.

When injected by someone with strong knowledge of the facial muscles, one can a) open up the eyes by elevating the brows, and b) rejuvenate the mouth with injections to upturn the corners of the mouth.

All of these injectables are administered in-office in less than an hour.

What Is Recovery Like After an Injectable Treatment?

Injectable treatments require virtually no downtime. Most patients are able to resume work and other daily activities immediately after treatment.

Some patients may experience mild side effects like swelling and redness at the injection site, but this should dissipate quickly.

What Results Can I Expect From My Injectable Treatment?

With the right injectable(s) and correct technique, patients can expect to achieve a rejuvenated result that looks natural and youthful. The results will, however, wear out after several months, so maintenance treatments are necessary.

Usually, dermal fillers last anywhere from six months to two years. Neuromodulators tend to be absorbed faster and require touch-up treatments every three to six months.
